Shanker Jaikishan and Hasrat Shailendra were a team made up above in the skies and sent to the mortal earth to entertain us endlessly.
There was a perfect bond among them which can neither be explained nor deconstructed. What can ordinary mortals like me, with not even an iota of knowledge of music write about their chemistry and synergy.
All I can write with immense gratitude is that they left behind a body of work which will remain matchless.
Na bhooto na bhavishvo..
Despite their superlative contribution to the film music, I am pained to say that the the so called elite music experts' groups rarely give them the respect they deserve. I may add that, it is also considered to be a fashion to belittle their work under some pretext or the other.
This was happening during their lifetime and continues to happen till date. But, neither of them ever cared for anything and continued to compete among themselves to excel their previous bests.
Here is an example, which was narrated to me by Prof Suhaschandra Kulkarni of Pune. He said, Shanker Jaikishan and Shailendra created a magical song for April Fool in1964 where the entire song was in few notes and different scales. It has the longest prelude ever in Hindi film music. The song is
aa gale lag ja mere sapne mere Apne
Years later, they combine with Hasrat Jaipuri to create a similar song on few notes and elaborate prelude, rich orchestra and chorus.
I have shared both the links for the readers to enjoy and compare how close these two songs are and how different they are.
That is the collective magic of Shanker Jaikishan Hasrat Shailendra.
